Subject: [K-list] running interference

Must be human nature to run interference in the game of life. LOL

Yesterday, this big, fat, baby bird fell out of a very high tree and
bounced down the stairs of my basement apartment to my door.

I had my door open, although the screen door was shut, and saw the
tumble down the stairs and heard the screeching.

Well, there was no way, unless a fire truck crane was handy, to put
the bird back up in it's nest. I was very concerned cause there are
some feral cats that patrol my yard regularly several times a day.

I picked the bird up, he did not resist, and put him in a box with
some paper towels and closed the lid.

He was big, round, and gray. He had a few white fluffy baby feathers
left on his head so he looked a little like a monk with a ring of
white ethereal hair above his ears.

I started calling animal rescues but only talked to answering
machines.

I made sure the little bird was comfortable and put him in a dark
quiet place as one recorded instructions I had listened to told me to
do. It also said DO NOT feed.

Well, I left for the day...went out for lunch with a friend and then
to the movies. When I came home that evening I was scared to I might
find a dead bird, but he wasnt. I listened to my voice mail where a
message told me "Do your best to get him back in the nest. But if you
can't, if he is an older baby bird with feathers, he was pushed out
to teach him how to fly. It will take him about three days to learn
how to do so and the parents will feed him during that time. If he is
truly injured call us and we will pick him up."

Still fearing for the cats, I took the box outside and turned it on
it's side to let him walk out himself when he was ready. I went to
bed with a prayer on my lips for his safety.

In the morning, I wake up to loud, screeching noises. He is bouncing
around the pine shrubs being fed by his parents. Sure enough, one of
the feral cats begins making his rounds. The baby becomes instantly
silent but the cat seems to searching for the baby. I just stand at
the screen door staring at the cat. As I do this, the adult birds
from the trees begin to "dive bomb" the cat like jet fighters and
drive him off.

Now, as I sit here and write this, the baby is flouncing around the
shrubs, trying it's wings, screeching it's little head off (it's
voice aint pretty), being fed almost continually by it's parents.

This is my lesson for me in karma for running interference today. :)

Blessings,
Susan
