Hi group,
I think this is my first post here, but I have been reading for several
weeks, now. So, hi all.
Jag's observation rings true to me. Let me start by saying that I am a
Quaker. In meeting I have often noticed that the qualities of the silence is
greatly effected and affected by who is in the room. I can't quite explain
it, but as the meeting becomes 'gathered' a common consciousness forms that
is sublime/profound and is both flavored by each entity and greater than the
sum of the parts. At any rate, I can tell who is there and who is not. Not
specifically like a list of the people, but tell by the energy, like not
being surprised when I look around afterwards and see who I had been meeting
with. It is a connection that happens independent of individual
personalities.... If someone is moved to speak it is common for the message
to be appropriate to the collective consciousness. I should also mention
that not all meetings are like this. There are some versions of Quakerism
that are very programmed and evangelical/bible-based. My meeting is what is
called unprogrammed and by being so it is more open to this sort of
connection, IMHO.
This all sounds so glowing on re-reading what I have written, so let me add
that there have been times when I have had to avoid meeting for one reason
or another, usually having to do with my own inability to remain vulnerable
when discordancies surface. OTOH, I think that there is no such thing as a
"perfect" religion, just perfect spirit, something we all are if we could
just get out of our own ways. :-)
