This mirroring thing is mentioned more-less all the time here on the list,
and I'd like to make a little analysis in order for us all to know what
we're talking about.

When they first start experiencing the movements of consciousness outside
the basic sensory conditioning, people start noticing that some of their
inner events - thoughts, emotional states etc - do not originate from
within themselves, but from other people; when someone suddenly and without
any apparent reason becomes angry, or sad, or depressed, or happy, and sees
that it happens in the presence of people who experience these states, one
comes to the conclusion that he was somehow reflecting those states, and
that they're not really his. Disowning such states is called detachment,
and represents one of the basic prerequisites of further growth; if one is
constantly swayed to one side or the other, it may become impossible for
him to find his real states and problems and work on them. This is one of
the reason why people go to a desolate place in order to meditate - it's
not that much a matter of the outer, sensory noise, but a matter of the
inner noise of thoughts and feelings, that keep flooding one's
consciousness and preventing him from finding himself in all that.

The technical side of the mirroring goes like this.
Human beings have astral bodies, which define their thoughts and emotions,
all the inner processes that include form, shape, naming conventions etc.
All the experiences that are emotional in nature are in fact prints in the
astral body - samskaras - which can be revived if they are brought to light
- if they are given energy, as it is commonly said. This astral body is
partially merged with the physical body and occupies the same physical
space, but one larger segment of it wonders around, as the thoughts and
feelings wonder, and it changes the spectrum of experience, from the lower
emotions like fear, anger, hatred, spite etc, to the higher emotions such
as love, acceptance, friendship, surrender etc, which in fact surpass the
astral sphere and enter the mental sphere, in their higher portion. The
mental sphere consists of the substance of love/understanding; when one
loves and accepts someone without conditioning, one in fact pours the
mental substance onto another person. Also, when one confers understanding
of things, it is also mental substance, but of another "color" in the
mental spectrum.

There are levels much higher than those two, but for the sake of clarity I
won't get into them now, because the phenomenon of mirroring usually takes
place only in the astral sphere, and very seldom in the mental sphere. In
the higher spheres, mirroring as a term, in the meaning used on this
conference, loses any meaning.

There are in fact several processes that are collectively called mirroring.
One of them is the principles of the lowest common denominator and of the
intersection of sets. When two people talk, the level of conversation is
determined by the intersection of their abilities to understand and feel.
The things below one person's span, and above the other person's span,
won't be communicated, because there is no equivalent on the other side.
When such people communicate in their intersection, it is possible that the
states in the intersection will be intensified, and the accusations of
mirroring might take place, but such accusations are misplaced.

The other process is the basic mirroring, where one person merely reflects
the state of the other, because of the contact of their astral bodies. The
impure person's astral body casts a shadow upon the astral body of the pure
person, and then the pure person observes it's state as soiled,
contaminated with dirt that it in fact doesn't possess. It is extremely
important to exercise detachment in such situations, in order to let such
states go as they come, without giving them much attention, since they are
not one's own. What is interesting, is that the _impure_ person most often
makes the actual accusation of mirroring, "it's all your fault" thing. The
impure person will always find it's own faults all over the other people,
and it's most important not to listen to what people say, but to observe
the actual situation impartially and see for oneself how the things stand.
Another phenomenon related to this type of mirroring is the astral
vampirism, where the impure person exploits the purer one, by first
imposing its perspective onto her, and then draining her energy. People who
lack purity often can't stand that someone's better than them, and they
have a tendency to want to destroy the other people's purity. All sorts of
manipulation of people are done from this motive. Here, one has to be even
more careful to be as objective and detached as possible, and to apply the
strictest possible scrutiny in order to filter out such things.

The third phenomenon is mutual mirroring, where two impure astral bodies
intensify each other's impurities, but different ones. In this case both
persons accuse each other of mirroring, where they should both apply ashes
to their heads and go somewhere to contemplate their navels.

The fourth phenomenon is the fear of light, which can be seen in
cockroaches. This happens in the presence of a strong, pure individual.
Such presence makes all the crap, obstacles, impurities etc. in the astral
bodies of people more visible. When this happens, the majority of people
start accusing such a person of all the things that have been stirred up in
them, because they observe those things but are morally too week to claim
their ownership. The source of light must be put out, in order for them to
be at peace with themselves, and continue the illusion of their own purity.
This is of course an ineffective method, because it adds up to killing the
messenger. This phenomenon is in fact merely a variation on the theme
mentioned above, where the impure casts a shadow upon the pure; the roles
are reversed, and the pure casts light upon the impure, making all the crap
visible.

As it can be seen, the analysis shows that we're not dealing with a simple
issue.
