This mirroring thing is mentioned more-less all the time here on the list, 
and I'd like to make a little analysis in order for us all to know what 
we're talking about.
 
When they first start experiencing the movements of consciousness outside 
the basic sensory conditioning, people start noticing that some of their 
inner events - thoughts, emotional states etc - do not originate from 
within themselves, but from other people; when someone suddenly and without 
any apparent reason becomes angry, or sad, or depressed, or happy, and sees 
that it happens in the presence of people who experience these states, one 
comes to the conclusion that he was somehow reflecting those states, and 
that they're not really his. Disowning such states is called detachment, 
and represents one of the basic prerequisites of further growth; if one is 
constantly swayed to one side or the other, it may become impossible for 
him to find his real states and problems and work on them. This is one of 
the reason why people go to a desolate place in order to meditate - it's 
not that much a matter of the outer, sensory noise, but a matter of the 
inner noise of thoughts and feelings, that keep flooding one's 
consciousness and preventing him from finding himself in all that.
 
The technical side of the mirroring goes like this.  
Human beings have astral bodies, which define their thoughts and emotions, 
all the inner processes that include form, shape, naming conventions etc. 
All the experiences that are emotional in nature are in fact prints in the 
astral body - samskaras - which can be revived if they are brought to light 
- if they are given energy, as it is commonly said. This astral body is 
partially merged with the physical body and occupies the same physical 
space, but one larger segment of it wonders around, as the thoughts and 
feelings wonder, and it changes the spectrum of experience, from the lower 
emotions like fear, anger, hatred, spite etc, to the higher emotions such 
as love, acceptance, friendship, surrender etc, which in fact surpass the 
astral sphere and enter the mental sphere, in their higher portion. The 
mental sphere consists of the substance of love/understanding; when one 
loves and accepts someone without conditioning, one in fact pours the 
mental substance onto another person. Also, when one confers understanding 
of things, it is also mental substance, but of another "color" in the 
mental spectrum.
 
There are levels much higher than those two, but for the sake of clarity I 
won't get into them now, because the phenomenon of mirroring usually takes 
place only in the astral sphere, and very seldom in the mental sphere. In 
the higher spheres, mirroring as a term, in the meaning used on this 
conference, loses any meaning.
 
There are in fact several processes that are collectively called mirroring. 
One of them is the principles of the lowest common denominator and of the 
intersection of sets. When two people talk, the level of conversation is 
determined by the intersection of their abilities to understand and feel. 
The things below one person's span, and above the other person's span, 
won't be communicated, because there is no equivalent on the other side. 
When such people communicate in their intersection, it is possible that the 
states in the intersection will be intensified, and the accusations of 
mirroring might take place, but such accusations are misplaced.
 
The other process is the basic mirroring, where one person merely reflects 
the state of the other, because of the contact of their astral bodies. The 
impure person's astral body casts a shadow upon the astral body of the pure 
person, and then the pure person observes it's state as soiled, 
contaminated with dirt that it in fact doesn't possess. It is extremely 
important to exercise detachment in such situations, in order to let such 
states go as they come, without giving them much attention, since they are 
not one's own. What is interesting, is that the _impure_ person most often 
makes the actual accusation of mirroring, "it's all your fault" thing. The 
impure person will always find it's own faults all over the other people, 
and it's most important not to listen to what people say, but to observe 
the actual situation impartially and see for oneself how the things stand. 
Another phenomenon related to this type of mirroring is the astral 
vampirism, where the impure person exploits the purer one, by first 
imposing its perspective onto her, and then draining her energy. People who 
lack purity often can't stand that someone's better than them, and they 
have a tendency to want to destroy the other people's purity. All sorts of 
manipulation of people are done from this motive. Here, one has to be even 
more careful to be as objective and detached as possible, and to apply the 
strictest possible scrutiny in order to filter out such things.
 
The third phenomenon is mutual mirroring, where two impure astral bodies 
intensify each other's impurities, but different ones. In this case both 
persons accuse each other of mirroring, where they should both apply ashes 
to their heads and go somewhere to contemplate their navels.
 
The fourth phenomenon is the fear of light, which can be seen in 
cockroaches. This happens in the presence of a strong, pure individual. 
Such presence makes all the crap, obstacles, impurities etc. in the astral 
bodies of people more visible. When this happens, the majority of people 
start accusing such a person of all the things that have been stirred up in 
them, because they observe those things but are morally too week to claim 
their ownership. The source of light must be put out, in order for them to 
be at peace with themselves, and continue the illusion of their own purity. 
This is of course an ineffective method, because it adds up to killing the 
messenger. This phenomenon is in fact merely a variation on the theme 
mentioned above, where the impure casts a shadow upon the pure; the roles 
are reversed, and the pure casts light upon the impure, making all the crap 
visible.
 
As it can be seen, the analysis shows that we're not dealing with a simple 
issue.
