 Dear Jerry,

Well, to be perfectly frank, I have a hard time telling one guru from
another-whether eastern or western. These people seem to change names rather
frequently, and many seem to be involved in one scandal or another. Or is it
all one scandal/guru?

If anyone knows of a website with a simple list of various gurus I'd love to
see it! :))

I think Ramana Maharshi's attitude would be look to yourself--don't worry so
much about others' behavior. I'm not sure whether I agree with this or not,
though. I quote Ramana Maharshi frequently not because I feel he is
infallible, but because much of what he says resonates with me and conforms
to my own experience. He does say that a teacher "helps you to get rid of
your delusion that you are not realized" and that "the Guru may be internal
or external. He may reveal Himself internally or communicate externally." I
have the feeling that the internal one is often more dependable.

Hello Hillary,
l'm afraid there's something to your first question: it
seems as though it's all just one guru/scandal, given the epidemic of
scandals we've seen. l'm not even going to attempt to explain it, except that
l do believe that the west tends to attract the less authentic ones, the ones
more likely to be interested in power. SB is similar in that while he didn't
come to the west, he's catered to westerners. l think most people never hear
of the true teachers who have no interest in power or fame.

Yes, l've found the inner guru more reliable for me too, although
k didn't give me much choice -- it rejected all gurus for me. l do think that
it's important to acknowledge the importance of the guru principle. lt's
worked well in many of the esoteric traditions for centuries -- it's the
foundation of the vajrayana tradition, among others. lt can be a powerful
tool for progress, as l discovered in my brief experience, and l have to
believe that it's still valid. But for whatever reasons, it's not faring well
these days, especially in the west. l do have a site that lists some, but not
nearly all, of the gurus:
http://www.inthelight.co.nz/Spirit/GurusAliveToday.htm

l also had a site which is run by an oranization which publishes
stuff on the fallen gurus -- l could probably get it again if you're
interested.

love,
jerry
