Without being judgemental for a moment, it could also mean that he is
deliberately trying to break his devotees' unthinking adoration of him.
Such transference can be helpful in the early stages of a student-
teacher relationship, but needs to be transcended if the students are to
find freedom in the end. If that is his motivation (and who knows?), the
tactic appears to be working.
