Re: "natural" immune system support:
zinc, manganese, vitamin C and beta-carotene (carrot juice, yum) all enhance
the immune system
In addition to echinacea and goldenseal (already mentioned by other posts),
licorice root (glycyrrhiza glabra) has antibiotic activity against staph,
strep, Candida (yeast infection) and has antiviral properties. It is
especially effective in treating respiratory tract infections such as
bronchitis, pharyngitis and pneumonia. Also an anti-inflammatory,
anti-spasmodic herb very useful for healing gastro-intestinal conditions such
as ulcers. AVOID use if you have high blood pressure or take digoxin
medication. Prolonged or large doses can cause psuedoaldosteronism (first
warning sign -- swollen ankles, immediately reversible upon ceasing to take
Also, St. Johns Wort (the entire herb, not just the hypericum extract used
for an anti-depressant) is anti-viral and extremely effective against staph
infections. Also analgesic (relieves pain). Can have some side effects.
Most common are digestive upset, skin rashes, fatigue or anxiety which
disappear when the herb is discontinued. Also not recommended for those with
high blood pressure.
The most potent natural germ-killer I've found is garlic. It has
antibiotic, antibacterial, antifungal properties and has been found useful in
lowering high blood pressure, as well as treating bronchitis, pneumonia,
allergies, dysentery and even cancer (licorice and St. Johns Wort have shown
cancer-fighting properties as well). I used it in the past to heal skin
infections, both by taking it internally (raw sliced garlic) and using it as
a poultice ( a tiny bit crushed on a bandage over the wound). This stuff can
practically raise the dead!! Unfortunately, it is also very hard on delicate
digestive systems, which I now have, courtesy of rampaging K.
