For colds (and less so for flu) I find trebling the RDA for Zinc works
very well indeed: in other words, taking 15mg Zinc three times a day,
for a total of 45mg, squashes the symptoms either on the first day if
you caught it early enough, or after about half the normal duration of a
cold (3 days instead of 7) or at worst lessens the normal strength of
the symptoms considerably. Studies were done which showed it to be
ineffective, but they tested zinc gluconate, which is indeed not much
use. Other forms of zinc tablets all seem to work fine with me.

Don't take more than 45mg per day - if you are taking too much, you will
know as you will get very thirsty. Eating salads helps too (probably
contains zinc).

Not related to zinc, but a book I recommend in general on foods that
help with illnesses and diseases is "Food Your Miracle Medicine," by
Jean Carper.
