Dear Andrea,
Thanks for the comments. I have all three of Monroe's books on order, and
I'm hoping to get them within the next ten days, so that I can read them
over Christmas.
Best wishes,
Tom

Tom,

Your experience sounds very much like what Robert A. Monroe (Monroe
Institute) describes in his first book on astral projection, "Journeys
Out of the Body." The fact that you "could accelerate at will" would
rule out a hypnagogic state I think, since in that state one feels an
alarming sense of *not* being in control. The sensation of vibration
is also very common in out-of-body experiences.

Also, "playful-tugging" is exactly what Monroe experienced from what
he referred to as low energy beings in his early astral journeys.
Sometimes, when he was fearful, he became stuck at that level, and the
beings would become menacing. When he realized that what he
encountered was controlled by his state of mind, he bypassed that
experience altogether in favor of a more high-minded (so to speak :))
journey.

I highly recommend any of Monroe's books. I read "Journey's Out of the
Body" in 1970, and it totally changed my life.
