May I venture that it is more correctly a genetic remembering
of the persecution in the past ...
  and the labelling as "insane
  or mad"

placed on any who dared to have a spiritual experience
that was not ratified by the (Roman in particular) Church
  of the time ...

and the subsequent treatment (persecution)
  dished out to the 'insane'
