These sorts of strange phenomena are notoriously difficult to verify
scientifically, because it is usually not possible to *prove* that the
children have never heard or overheard the stories. There is evidence
that some children remember things they heard whilst still in the womb,
although how they remember that is not known since, I think, their
brains have grown but are not properly finished until some time after
they have been born, when the myelin sheaths develop around their
nerves, and anyway, they haven't learned the language at that stage. The
other side of the problem is what constitutes an "accurate" memory,
since this is something that can only be assessed second-hand at best.
Also, it is not possible, third-hand, to determine the amount of
prompting the children get and how that may affect what they say (the
"Clever Hans" phenomenon especially, where they can see how satisfied
the questioner is with the answers given). It is well-known that, for
instance, regression hypnotists looking for evidence of UFO abduction
tend to find it, whilst those looking for evidence of childhood abuse
tend to find that, and so on. Children are typically highly suggestible.
Personally, I classify these sorts of things as "unknown" since although
it would seem possible to explain them away with fairly straightforward
explanations such as I've given, the explanations are also unproved.
