Dear Jenell,

Sorry, I've had a visitor all morning!

For Samadhi, my Eastern definitions book says "In some forms (there are
several) the individual exists in complete detachment from both the self and
from the godhead. The Bhagavad Gita states that samadhi is "seeing the self
as abiding in all things and all things in the self."

In short, I guess, losing a sense of individual identity.

Of Satori it says: "The sudden illumination or enlightenmnet received in Zen
Buddhism...the consensus is that satori characterized either mentally or
emotionally is not satori, for the experience is beyond communication and
explanation. To Zen practitioners satori is not samadhi ...but a stage
beyond; to zen Buddhists samadhi is nothing more than the unification of
consciousness, while satori is an awakening from such a state. Satori is
said to come abruptly and momentarily: if the experience or sensation
persists, it is not satori..."

Well, learned something new! :)) Thought they were pretty much the same.

Maybe the equivalent in Christianity is Grace, Transmutation of the self in
God. (Underhill) , Illumination, Unitive state?

I don't know. Perhaps dualism gets in the way, here?

Love, Hillary
