And even that wouldn't 100% prove genetic effects. The child would still
have been carried in a womb of a mother that has stress over husband who
is/has been in the war (or, in the case of grandmother, she herself has
already been affected).

Foolproof study: take two mothers (identical twins) and two fathers
(ditto). Both men go to fight a war or two, then fertilize the women who
don't know which sperm they are receiving. The women will raise the kids
identically, preferably in the same household. Repeat few thousand times,
or until the results are clear. Ethical considerations are left as an
excercise for the reader, or the shocked future generations :-).
