The appearance of Hildegard's name in a recent post to the list has
moved me to ask about something that appeared on the PBS show FRONTLINE the
other night. The show was about apocalyptic thinkers and their visions based
on the REVELATIONS chapter of the new testament -- it was an excellent
program. l have a couple videos about Hildegard, and from what little l know
l have respected her reputation as one of the more gifted christian mystics.
So l
was shocked and disappointed at what was said about her on this program: that
she'd had a major apocalyptic vision that, among other things, revealed to
her a jewish satanic, anti-christ figure , which helped launch her on a
major anti-jewish crusade and helped promote centuries of anti-semitism in
Europe. l had two reactions to this: disappointment in her, of course; but
also a reminder that mystical experiences are not infallible, even those of
so-called great spiritual beings.
Now,
some may be linking this with my Sai Baba remarks and asking if l'm on some
crusade against the spiritually famous --- to which l would say au contraire
and LOL! lt's not the case. l'm not a debunker by any means. l always want
to believe in all these people and certainly make room for human fallibility.
But l also have this unfortunate thing about the truth. Does anyone have
anything to add about Hildegard?
