Rather than thinking that people who function as
Angelique does as are holding themselves superior,
perhaps I could lay out the reality of such a
function. In South Africa, where I was born and
raised, the training of an African sangoma (healer or
witchdoctor, depending on your point of view and their
type of practice) requires slave-like service to the
teacher, no matter what you get presented with. A
white South African wrote a very revealing book about
her training as a sangoma. It was an eye-opener,
especially her last initiation before she became a
teacher in her own right. She was required to kill
both a goat and a cow, then to crawl through a
compound and eat the excrement of the goat, all of it,
from a bowl. She was then given an emetic to throw up
the excrement so she got to taste it going down and
coming up. That's the job of an adept. If my story
holds no credence, Lynn William's books on her
training in the shaman tradition echo very similar
stories. If you wish to exercise power, you get to
crawl lower than the worms first. So it's not really a
case of superiority. It's all about eating crap of
different kinds so that you can accurately discern
what is in the bowl. Like in Alcoholics Anonymous...to
get there you first have to be an alcoholic. Looked at
this way, it's not so much fun any more --
superior...no. Just got drunker a little sooner, a
little earlier.
