I think in this experiment it wasn't actually passed on to the next 
generation, but the worms who had learned the maze were ground up and 
fed to their colleagues who were then shown to learn the maze more 
easily than those not fed. This was used to support the theory that the 
learning was encoded chemically - stored in the structure of proteins.
 
Human short-term memory seems to be electrical in nature, but long-term 
memory seems to be some combination of neural pathways and proteins.
 
Perhaps someone who knows more about this experiment can let us know?
