Hi!
I'm glad you mentioned that there is no meditative state
that produces a trance. A trance implies 'zoned out'. In
meditation, the mind should remain clear and if it doesn't
there are things you can do to regroup; there are various
breathing techniques, or one can get up and do slow walking
meditation without mantras for a while and then sit and
resume them.
What a mantra can produce is an altered state of
consciousness
but that doesn't mean a trance. This altered state can be
what
we are unfamiliar with; serenity and peacefulness. However,
even in a serene and peaceful state the mind is alert,
focusing
on the 'now' or the present moment.

Hugs,
Adele
