Some people, including myself, prefer to recite a mantra during meditation.
This is simply a matter of personal choice. Mantras are just one of the many
ways how people meditate. It's like some people prefer apples and some
prefer bananas. It doesn't really matter by what method you meditate. The
choice is up to you. It's not about one way being better than the other,
it's about choosing the method that's the most suitable for yourself at the
moment.

To me it seems that meditation and trance are not the same thing.
During meditation, the mind is actually supposed to stay alert and focussed,
where as during a state of trance, the mind is not focussed and is getting
'lost', so to speak. Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with either of
those two states of
mind in my opinion, but they are not quite the same thing and mentioning
them in the same breath sounds to me like an oxymoron because one state
would exclude the other.

Well, if you never tried mantra recitation, how would you know wether it's
dangerous to do so and into which basket to throw it?
