It's derived from germanic word Willhelm... and Vainio is old-style
finnish for field. In England I would probably be Bill Field.
English-speaking ppl often write my last name as "Vaino", which means
"oppression" in finnish :-).

I tend to think that their original "purpose" is to awaken K, and from
that point on the vehicle is driving itself - meditating if it seems
necessary, doing something else when appropriate, etc.

Biologically it might be interpreted as a rediscovery of the spiritual
animal that is not "needed" at current socio-evolutionary state. Perhaps
areas of reptilian brain that we are still carrying around, only in
inactive latent mode? We could go on guessing forever... but I just
recently started to experience different kinds of animal, bestial feelings
of well being I don't normally do.

My feelings exactly... with the addition of realization of the absence of
free will. Even though I see that the Boddhisattva ideal is a "guide" for
us, more than a suggestion to help. Reminder that nirvana=samsara.
