Hi Jay,
Thank you for your letter. I wasn't aware of the distinction between Fire
and Water methods before. I have "Opening The Energy Gates of The Body" on
order, and now that I know about them, I'll get the other books by
Frantzis.

I've e-mailed the person who referred to "The Circle Of Gold" and as soon
as I get an answer from him I'll let you know.

In high level Taoist alchemy, there are Kan and Li practices (fire and
Water). Is Frantzis' idea of alchemy the same as Mantak Chia's?

My training background is mainly Karate. However, I am leading up to
beginning a new phase which will involve a lot of energy work. At the
moment I do some Tensegrity, allegedly shamanic energy practices. Within
the next few weeks I am starting Goju Kai Karate, and also Chen style Tai
Chi Chuan. I am doing preliminary work on the Microcosmic Orbit. This
involves storing chi in the Tan Tien, and also doing an exercise that
brings prana into the Manipura Chakra. The exercise is Solar Plexus
Charging, and it is described in "A Chakra and Kundalini Workbook" by John
Mumford. In january 2000 I will start circulating the chi in the
Microcosmic Orbit. Around then I also plan to train in Wild Fowl (Dayan)
and 8 Brocade Chi Kung. Next year I will also be visiting a Mantak Chia
centre to learn Iron Shirt, Bone Marrow and Tai Chi Chi Kung. I wonder if
you could tell me if it is possible to do some Chi Kung exercises every
other day, or every 3 days, as that is a lot of Chi Kung exercises! Next
year I also plan to begin the 3 year correspondence course offered by John
Mumford:

What is very good about this course is that it is very cheap (about $300)
and instruction can be offered in some powerful Bihar and Tantric Kriyas
usually only passed on to students who have been initiated in India.

You asked me for my observations on different kinds of energy practises.
It is my feeling that prana and chi are similar, if not the same, but
kundalini may be different from chi. I think Motoyama hgas written some
books on the subject. Also there is a difference between kundalini yoga
where the energy goes up the spine, and laya yoga, where the energy goes
down the spine. I think that the Microcosmic Orbit may protect you from
negative k symptoms because the energy is brought down the front channel,
thereby stopping it from getting stuck - anything that circulates the
energy and therefore disperses blockages and channels it well is good. I
would like to know more about the Cosmic energy coming down the spine that
you referred to, and also Neo-Taoism.

When I wrote about Mindfulness, I was talking about a Buddhist practice,
mainly associated with Sri Lanka and Burma. Have a look at "The Heart Of
Buddhist Meditation" by N. Thera. It involves being aware of thoughts,
feelings and bodily sensations as they occur and classifying them according
to Buddhist theory. In Zen, there is Tozan's Five Ranks, and one of them
is "Man is not deprived, circumstances are not deprived" which means that
the Zen person is aware, and at the same time aware of being aware.

I work as a software developer in Manchester, and in 3 years I will be
moving back to the North Wales country and working from home for my
employers over the internet. Being able to work from home means that I
will have freedom to work the way I want to. There is a type of
biofeedback machine which can profile what is going on in your brain:

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/biomonitors/MindMirror.htm

You can train it to recognise negative emotions or bad concentration by
using neural network software. When working, I hope to hook myself up to
this machine, and have the computer inform me if it recognises certain
types of negative emotions. Then I would do the appropriate technique to
deal with that karma. From reading Mantak Chia, I understand that bodily
organs are associated with certain negative emotions (e.g. the heart with
anger, the lungs with sadness), so then I would cicrulate chi down the
appropriate meridians or do one of the Six Healing Sounds or a Chi Kung
exercise to regain equanimity.

I would also hope to be able to keep the Macrocosmic Orbit going even as I
work (biofeedback training with the Mind Mirror and post-hypnotic
suggestion would make this possible).

Let me know about Neo-Taoism and Cosmic training, and anything else you
think I'd be interested in knowing!
Best wishes,
Thomas Bradley
