Hello, everyone,
I've been in Michigan for the past 10 days (my
mother broke her hip) and I missed the List very much.
So, forgive me if this has already been discussed (I
haven't seen all of the posts about EGO, yet)...
I think there's a defination difference between
the Eastern word EGO and the way the Westerners use it.
I think of the Eastern term as more EGO-TISTICAL as
in self-centered. In the Western view, one cannot
exist without an EGO because it has to do with something
deepers; more like IDENTITY.
I am reminded of a phrase I first heard many years
ago: the only way one can find oneself is to lose oneself.
But one has to have something to begin with in order to
lose it. That would be a Western way of looking at the EGO.
I think, in years to come, the translations that
come out of Eastern philsophy will differ from the way they
are used today. EGO will be substituted with something
else.
Like in the early translations of the Buddhist Four Noble
Truths where 'desire' is used and that's now been replaced
with 'grasping', which is more to the point.
