On 1999/09/23 15:45, Soren Ryland posted thus to the K-list:
I will vouch for the beneficial effects of Yoganda's teachings:

I have taken his course and studied his methods for the past ten years and
gotten tremendous advances in my spiritual growth. Using his methods, I
have attained wonderful levels of peace and joy and a close loving
relatinship with the Infinite (God, whatever name you want to use). The
results that he promised would come as a faithful practice of the techniques
did indeed come, much more than I expected. I have even felt the Kundalini
start to rise from my root chakra up the spine when I was practicing certain
exercises and relaxed deeply.

My mother has been using the techniques for the same period and I have
seen great changes in her too: her negativity has gone away, being replaced
with a bright positiviness and youthfulness of attitude, and she has felt
the energy bubble up her spine too during the exercises, as well as other
phenomena we have both experienced that Yogananda predicted.

In addition, his organization charges peanuts for the teachings and books --
go into Barnes and Noble or any other major bookstore and you will see his
Autobiography of a Yogi published by SRF-- the group he founded to
disseminate his teachings) selling for for very little ($4.50 for a several
hundred page paperback book, last I checked).

As far as his Autobiography being phony, there are many reports of
supranormal events in the stories of saints and yogis as far back as the
terms go -- there are people who believe such things cannot be true, but
then there are others who say that what appears to be magic to some is
science to others. I have my doubts about Rampa and Castaneda, but I have
had too much benefit from Yogananda's methods to disbelieve his book. Does
the author disbelieve the Bible as well, and rely only on authors who live
solely among their books and write dry and boring annotations of the sacred
writings of others, having no experience themselves? A book that I highly
recommend for those interested in paranormal experiences and Tibet is
Alexandra David-Neeel's "Magic and Mystery in Tibet".
