I think it was a law series made (produced?) by David E Kelley. It was not 
Ally McBeal, but the one with a black man as a defence attorney. The man 
on trial was a priest that had done excorcism to a schizophrenic(?), hit 
him/her in the head and accidentally killed him/her. Perhaps the law was 
that doing excorcism to *insane* people is illegal.
