Reiki isn't actually a meditation per se, although being in a meditative
state while sharing Reiki seems to kind of add to the experience. It's not
an "exercise" in that you don't do breathwork or do asanas. It is, quite
simply, being a channel for the Universal or Divine energy. The channel is
opened and activated through a process that resembles shaktipat: it can be
done by a touch, or by a thought. Most of the attunements I do are
"distant attunements," in that the student is usually at some distance from
me, often halfway around the world.

It was introduced in this country under pretty much false pretenses,
although I'm sure Mrs. Takata meant well. Stories that Usui attended
university in Chicago IL and was a Christian are turning out to be
completely false. I think she was trying to make Reiki palatable to a
mostly Christian country that had a lot of resistance to Eastern influences
in the first place because of the war.

In my own research, I'm finding that Reiki can probably be traced back to
the Tibetan Buddhists. Studying the various texts now available in the
west, the similarities between what occurs in Reiki, and what is taught as
the Yoga of Inner Heat from the 6 Yogas of Naropa, are striking. And of
course, the teachings of the 6 Yogas can be traced back to India--so the
road to Yourtown is long and winding.

Reiki cannot be taught in the usual meaning of the word. One must be
attuned, because it is this process that opens up the centers and the
channels.

Yes and no. QiGong (one of the many spellings) uses a sort of energy
activation system, but it's not the same at all. (I've practiced it in the
past.) In QiGong there are all sorts of exercises, mental and physical, to
collect Qi and move it around, also to store it. In Reiki, that is not the
case. Once attuned, you simply get the mind and will out of the way and
let it flow. You can use both (I used to do that, but no longer do), but
they are really not the same. The energy though--that might be the same.
I can't say for sure.

I both agree and disagree with you here. Reiki has been marketed in the
west as a healing tool, and it can be. The spiritual benefits, however,
far outweigh the physical ones. The two sides of Reiki are nevertheless
bonded together: one cannot truly heal without spiritual advancement, and
one cannot easily advance spiritually with a broken down body and mind.

Again, a small disagreement. A 1st Degree student can do distant healings
as well as a 2nd Degree. No symbols have been given yet, of course, and
certainly the channels haven't been opened as much--but it (distant work)
can be done. Heck, someone with no Reiki whatever can do distant work. In
various faiths around the world, throughout time, it's often called prayer,
and it works very well. Opening up those channels and centers, though,
will really enhance this kind of work.

The point of it all is this: there really is no such thing as either time
or space. Some people come into this realization through many years of
yoga, meditation, or other practices. Some are born Knowing. Others get
attuned to Reiki and come to Know it, even if they're not taught this
directly--and I have to say, some teachers don't realize this consciously,
so they don't teach it. (One of mine, for instance, taught us that we
would need more energy than ever to send healings at a distance because the
energy had to go farther.) When we attune, or when we heal, we Know it
more than ever. There is only Here and Now. So in a sense, it's not
"distant" work at all. It's extremely local. :)

My take on Reiki---it clears the channels and centers. If the person is
ready for k to awaken, it will do so much easier than with any other method
I've ever known, because the blocks and other "gunk" that clogged the
channels is gently melted away.

As you can tell, this is a subject dear to my heart. :)
