Jerry,

I think the best advice for someone like your friend is to tell him to
WILL THEM AWAY. Everyone has the power to dispel negative energy --
once they realize they can. Also, I agree with the other K-list
members that the priest is not helping the situation, mostly because
he has done nothing to empower your friend.

If your friend is unable to find his WILL (which may be the case since
his symptoms are so severe), there are many other ways to remove
spirits. The gentlest, quickest, and most effective of the ways I've
used is Reiki -- specifically a Reiki Healing Attunement. I would
suggest you find a Reiki Master in your area who is knowledgeable of
this technique, being mindful that you want to work with someone who
will empower him. If you need assistance in trying to find someone in
your area, I'll be happy to help you if you write me privately.
