I have, but never really got too involved in adventure games: once I get
stuck, their play value drops to zero pretty rapidly for me.

That is, unless you count games like Tomb Raider, which is a mixture of
adventure and shoot-em-up. That is a great game! Still, though, I get
fed up after a while. Same with Doom! And Unreal. More, I prefer the God
games, such as Populous (the original version), or Age of Empires, or
Civilization: I can spend days playing these, as I a) imagine how I am
creating a world and a history, and b) learn strategic thinking which I
can apply in my life, and c) stand amazed at those people who, in real
life, seem to think it is OK to go out and conquer the world, d)
studying the effect of "flow" as sometimes I become "one with the game,"
and time ceases to enter my awareness, and self-consciousness disappears
too - especially if I am winning! It is a form of mini-enlightenment, I
think. I am learning to transfer that flow to daily life, gradually.

I find the shooting games suit me better when I am depressed or stressed
(so I can just blast the baddies and be done with them), and the God
games when I am more in control, or want to be.
