"Synchronicity" is variously described as a "lucky accident" or a
"meaningful coincidence." It is supposed to be an event that is not
causally generated by the situation it is relevant to, but relates to it
or links to it anyway, usually by the meaning we ascribe to it.

For example; I might go to a bookshop with no clear idea of just what
I'm looking for, browse for a while, find nothing, then just idly pick
up a book "at random." I buy it, and although it looked as if it might
be interesting, it turns out to be more than that: it is highly relevant
to my life just now. That can be regarded as such an event.

Another example; I might be busy processing my "Mother" archetype in my
dreams. In my waking life, my attention is drawn to images of tigers,
dragons, spiders and so on: all "Mother" symbols for some people and all
of a sudden I'm seeing them all over the place. My subconscious is
clearly still working on the problem!

The writer Robert Anton Wilson has suggested that the Universe can be
regarded as a giant random-access database. When you are looking for
something, or concentrating on something, it throws up all kinds of
linked phenomena, as if to say, "is this what you're looking for?" He
gives an example of a time he (or someone) was in LA (I think) looking
for someone with a specific rare surname. They were the only family in
the city with this surname, but they were not in the phone book (I think
- anyway, he couldn't find them). Well, he got in a taxi, and got
talking to the driver, and, yes, the taxi driver was a member of that
family...

I tend to use synchronicity as a signal that things are going OK. I
start to worry if it stops happening as I wonder if I'm not listening to
the "divine guidance" that is available to me. Of course, sometimes, one
just has to decide for one's self: that's what my ego's for, after all!
One of the things it is for, anyway, I suppose.
