I had this experience, too, as a child. It was also in school. When I was
bored, I would stare at the teacher and she and everything around became
very tiny and distant, just as you describe. There was also a strange
physical feeling that accompanied the experience, a kind of fuzzy, slightly
uncomfortable field, is the best way I can describe it. In adulthood I
also asked a psychiatrist about it, but he didn't know what I was talking
about.
