Subject: [K-list] Eclipse Report

Well, I travelled to the SW of England to watch the eclipse; it was a
nice cloudy day! I saw a couple of glimpses of the shining crescent Sun
through the clouds, but mostly they were too thick to see any of it.

However, even though the clouds obscured the eclipse itself, totality
was quite obvious: the sensation when the sky went dark for those few
seconds (about 30 where I was viewing from) was quite primal. It would
certainly have scared anyone who didn't know what was going on. At first
the darkness came on very gradually, until it became like a dingy mid-
winter's day: then, over the course of about 10 seconds, it was as if
someone was cranking down a cosmic dimmer switch and it all went dark.

The cat came out, apparently to see why we were standing on the grass.
He looked a little sheepish, but didn't seem to be concerned about the
darkness: only bothered because people weren't indoors as usual.

The sky was dark except for a glow around the horizon. All sounds
stopped, except, strangely enough, the sounds of people: from all around
I could hear the sounds of babbling voices like the sound of a party
between tunes, only instead of "Mind my foot!" it was: "Oo look!" and
"Isn't it dark?". On the hill nearby, people were trying to photograph
the darkness - I could see the flashes going off. Perhaps they expected
the flashes to light up the sky again so it looked normal? I suspect a
general eclipse of their IQ's coincided with the solar one.

Then the cosmic dimmer switch went into reverse, the world lit up again,
and we thought, "Hmmm..." and went indoors.
