This is a cool thread.

I've often thought much about death and reincarnation. Had to with so many
family members & friends dropping off the planet! LOL! I used to be a firm
believer in the generally accepted view of reincarnation. Over the years, my
enthusiasm waned w/no particular substitution.

Then, last spring, a friend died of breast cancer. Dido was only 36. A few
days after she died, I was over at her house with her now-widowered husband
smoking cigarettes and being there. Dido was into more esoteric spiritual
matters, and we both knew she was hanging around. Mostly checking in on Sam.
Anyway, her sisters came by to go thru things and be with Sam too. The
sisters are devout Christians. Conversation turned to reincarnation, and
Dido's belief in it. The sisters were much worried about this. Suddenly
this realization popped into my head: Belief in successive, linear
reincarnation devalues the life we live. Viola! I said this to them, and
they seemed to take great comfort in it. Perhaps, that was the point of it
anyway. Still, in the background of my mind . . .

Bits of things I'd been thinking/reading/ruminating about over the years came
together. You take a bit of Jung and the collective unconsciousness, add
genetic heritage - the biological memory, stir in some collectively agreed
upon history, fold in parallel dimensions stuff - that reincarnated memories
are really potential actions and selves being expressed in cocurrent
dimensions, picture yourself, your soul as an expanding creation in the
universe - a galaxy unto itself, see that self intersecting times and places
of consciousness (since there's really only the now and all else is personal
conjecture), imagine those bits of self reporting back in distorted shapes
and sounds and experiences, flashes, pulses of info coursing across synapses,
giving you a look at yourself from another perspective. Viola, again!

Hell if I know whether it's right or what, but it suits me for now.
Happily perplexed,
Melissa
