Exactly. Closely related to our public persona: the mask we present to
the world. And of course, this is part of the problem that the ego
presents: a false image of ourselves both for internal and external
 consumption. snip......

I think that this may be where the mystical emphasis on diminishing the
ego and quelling your inner chatter come from. Krishnamurti's method is
to simply observe it, without judgement: you will quickly find that the
mind goes quiet and (he doesn't say this quite like this so I may be
mistaken) and you therefore can dis-identify with its thoughts, thus
transcending your ego without losing it. >>

I, too, have been thinking more along this line. Part of what makes this
interesting to me is that ego and personality are defined very similarly, tho
I tend to think of the two quite differently. I think of ego as the
substance of individuality behind the more affected personality. That the
ego is the core self, and the personality is the self-fashioned exterior
(based on what sort of person we think we need to be) projected onto our day
to day life. And when I think things like this, it occurs to me that you
could easily substitute subconscious for ego and conscious for personality in
the above. Not that those linear definitions really completely jibe.

I think of the personality as the source of the chatterbox in the brain - a
life-like puppet of who you have imagined/created yourself to be. (Now,
there's an interesting visual! That might come in handy a little later as a
meditation to quiet my noisy head - just put the puppet away for a while!
LOL!)

So in this sense, is being "egotistical" really being "personalitistical"?

Does it really matter? LOL!
Kindly,
Melissa
