Dear Hillary,

When I started practising Hatha Yoga 4 years ago I included pranayama
(breath control), bandhas (locks) and meditation right away. Back then I
learned all the breath control exercises as well as the bandhas from a book.
The asanas I often did with a friend who also were practised Hatha Yoga.
This meant that I did a lot of very powerful exercises without really
realizing what I was doing back then. The book I learned from merely
mentioned that those breath control exercises and bandhas were meant to
improve the flow of prana (life force) throughout the body and were to
improve my general health and wellbeing. Kundalini was mentioned in the book
too but this concept sounded a bit too esoteric to me and I disregarded it
as a mere metaphor.

Pretty soon I started to notice changes within myself and had some
experiences that startled and surprised me like energy shooting up my back
while seated for meditation that shook and rocked my whole body and made me
jerk and twist while it happened. Increased sensitivity to presence of other
peoples energy field. Once sensation of an outside "presence" in the room
while doing meditation. Hindu deities (Kali and Shiva) as well as symbols
(crescent moon, geometrical figures, mandala like pictures) showing up
vividly in front of my closed eyes during meditation. This was a bit much
for me at the time and I became almost afraid of meditation because some of
those visions, especially while seeing Kali Ma, were usually accompanied by
strong emotions and I found tears streaming down my face in a sensation of
bliss, release of pain and the desire to go "home". During my travels in
India I was exposed to Hinduism just by being there but I wasn't a Hindu. I
like to note here that the deities I found the most interesting when
confronted with Hinduism were Shiva, Kali and Durga. Maybe because there was
already some kind of affinity there that I saw them during my meditaion
instead of other deities. Anyways, it surprised me that I should see symbols
of a religion foreign to me, myself coming from a Lutheran Christian
background.

At the same time I noticed an increase again of pain under my left
shoulderblade and in the area of the cerebellum as well and an increase of
migraines and insomnia. Often I did not sleep for more than 3 or 4 hours a
night and this unsettled me, because I am one of those 8 hour a night type
sleepers. All in all, I had a total exess of energy within me and my whole
body felt like it was vibrating from it, I didn't really know what to do
with this energy nor did I understand what was going on with me, although I
vaguely connected those symptoms to the exercises I was doing. At the same
time there were a lot of changes in my personal life as well. Within that
year I got separated from my boyfriend, changed my profession, changed from
being employed to self employed, got back together with my boyfriend, moved
to another continent and got married.

In the past 4 years I never abandoned Hatha Yoga, cut back on pranayama,
bandhas and meditation for a while. Picked up meditation again and just now
I'd like to give breath control and bandhas another shot. Right now I hardly
ever get insomnia anymore, migraines once or twice a month and I got used to
sometimes perceiving things for which I cannot give a rational explanation
and which I cannot well describe with words.

Love,
Karin
