HELLO GOPALANN : I enjoyed reading your post on pranayama and its usage by
your guru. Your explanation of pranayama is correct as I understand it, and I
appreciated your sharing of your son's experience. I would like to point out
other possibilities, however, from my own experience. I had an awakening of k
at ajna 7 yrs ago from doing vipassana meditation. I was meditating on my own
at the time, and after this opening I basically continued on my own, simply
observing powerful energy flows, without any other form of breathing
techniques. After 6 mos I went to a sufi pir who gave me pranayama to do
--after 6 wks of that very bad headaches began which still plague me to this
day. After the sufi pir I also went to a powerful swami who used shaktipat
and I developed further physical problems from which I am also still
suffering.
I have very briefly related my
experience to raise two questions: based on the experience I and others have
had in the west, it has often been found that using pranayama and other
breathing techniques can be harmful to one who already has activated k; it
has also been found that going to a swami or other teacher after one has
already activated k has caused problems, as happened to me. People seem to
have a better chance of success, with less risk, if they go to a swami or a
teacher before k has activated, as you did. Of course the problem can involve
finding a true master, as opposed to a teacher who is not such, but I feel
strongly that my swami was a true master. This
has been difficult for me for several reasons, one of which is that prior to
my awakening I had travelled India widely, was familiar with the teachings of
the Indian masters, and was convinced based on what I had read that once k
was awake I definitely needed a master to guide me through it. Yet my
experience was the opposite, as far as I can tell. So far, at least, I have
done much better on my own, following my own intuition, and I know others who
have had the same experience. We live in an unprecedented time, when
teachings that were secret for centuries have been transported across time
and cultures to the modernized western way of life. I've wondered how much
this has had to do with the confusion I've felt about trying to reconcile my
experience with what I've always read about in eastern texts. Anyway, I've
offered this not to contradict what you have shared, because I still believe
in the accomplishments of the Indian masters and in their teachings. It just
doesn't appear to always apply in the current environment. Just wondering,
is/was your guru in India or in the US? jerry
