HELLO AGAIN FOLKS: Just a few more things on sad films. I said that LIFE
IS BEAUTIFUL won a couple oscars--it actually won 3 for best foreign film,
actor and music--anyone who hasn't seen it should go. Someone mentioned
SOPHIES CHOICE--about as heart-breaking a film as can be imagined, if our
friend Dave wants to go that far. In recent years I was especially moved by
PHILADELPHIA--great acting by tom hanks and denzil washington in a sad story,
but what really made me cry was the scene where they play Maria Callas
singing an aria from Andrea Chenier in the background while hanks weeps about
his lost life--the most effective use ever of opera in film. (Hey, if I feel
like crying I just put on any old recording of Callas --it usually takes
about 5 seconds). When I'm trying to bring feelings up, it's not necessarily
a sad film I need, just a film or music or anything that makes me FEEL.
good luck dave jerry
