Hi folks,
The reason I titled this out on a limb is because, when I look back to my
teenage years, it was good old Shirley McLean's first book that resonated
with me and began me on my journey....I was about 15.
It is also where a group of people at a local United Church in my hometown
feel right now, and I thought some of you k-ites would be interested in
hearing about this little group.
Although my beliefs are a bit more...ahhh...let's say eclectic, I have found
myself drawn to a local United (for you Americans United church's are known
for being quite liberal....they ordain homosexuals etc.) church.
The real reason is the minister...in him I saw some hope for the "masses".
He is a reformed staunch Calvinist, divorced remarried, who had his
spiritual awakening while drumming. (How many other ministers pull out the
African drum during a service and play along with the choir?).
He has had a complete 180 in his conservative beliefs and now leads a group
called "The Discovery Group" or sometimes "Creation Spirituality" on
Wednesday nights.
The gruop discusses "controversial" subjects which would be old-hat to most
of us....IE can't take the bible literally. The group attracted about 30
people, including myself.
I wasn't sure why I felt compelled to go as I though the conversation would
be basic and therefore frustrating.
What I have been priviledged to witness is the AWAKENING of alot of
souls....not a big revolutionary K awakening....no one is dropping and
popping into yogic positions spontaneously. But the dawning of the light of
understanding in their eyes.
Some people have felt very isolted in their gut feelings about the bible and
institutional religion. They have never heard of kundalini I am sure.....all
they knew was the stirring in their souls.
Here was someone...a minister at that...confirming what they have always
believed and the joy in these people is incredible.
One couple came from the local methodist church....and have subsequently
lost the majority of their friends. They are on a path of evil after all. No
virgin birth.!!!..whaddya mean Jesus never REALLY said he was the ONLY way
to God.!!! The group even attracted a former nun who was taken out of her
comfort zone and quite upset by the whole thing. The wife of the BAPTIST
PREACHER in town comes to this group. A staunch Roman Catholic comes to this
group, an old guy who doesn't reason very well, and continulllay throws out
the rhetoric about why we are on the wrong path. But now and then, he takes
a few baby steps forward....so scared at the same time that he may be
risking eternal damnation.
Every once in a while I throw in my two cents...of course I tame my comments
down a bit....this is a SMALL town ya know....but I have been very surprised
about how this group of very white, mostly older "proper" people can no
longer accept what has been handed down to them, and while remaining members
of the church...helping out with the rummage sales etc, are changing their
entire system of beliefs to finally conform with what they ahve always known
at a deeper level to be true. One guy is in his 80s for goodness sake.
What is also interesting is the not so quiet opposition this group has
gotten from other members of the church...to the point where some of them
have been downright RUDE to people within the church they hardly know, just
because they are members.
Losing your former friends, feeling look down upon by some members of the
local community...these things wouldn't really bug me or most of us
here...but what courage it takes for these folks!
We may at time feel like a group of "Spiritual Elites" on this list...how
many people have ever heard of any of the words we use...never mind have any
understanding of what experiences we have...chakras, visions, grounding,
trembling etc etc...these things are still NOT a part of most peoples lives.
But in this little church, in a small Canadian town, there's a
transformation just as incredible going on folks...and I for one, feel
priviledged to be a part.
