I hope someday that you do have to deal with all that stuff. Why should you
have all
the fun? Seriously I feel unhappy about homelessness. One needs a little
living space
to self actualize. I don't know that American culture is conducive to the
homeless becoming wandering yogis and
ascetics. I imagine that that such homeless people would aggravate the the
Christian based missions. Somehow,
the mischievous side of me gets overjoyed to envision homeless people
chanting Hindu songs of devotion
to Kali, while the Baptist minister starts screaming about Satan. I once was
homeless, and I was staying at a Catholic
shelter. I did a chant that had its origin from northern India right in the
empty vestibule. All the church functionaries came out to hear
what mysterious mantra was being sung. They were really po-ed at me. "You
can't do that in here. This is a Catholic Church," one of
them said. Well, I quit because I needed a place to stay. Another thing not
conducive to contemplation is the free range the cops
have to come in any time they want to inspect the barracks for criminals. At
any place where one pays money, the police would have had to get
a warrant. But if you can keep a meditative head on your shoulders in such a
place, then you are quite an adept. I remember the story how
Nanak, the child, would try to poke a meditating yogi with a stick. The yogi
would snarl with irritation, and Nanak would say, "If you had true
detachment, then you would not have felt that." The young Nanak was pretty
mischievious.

Love, Dave
