Maureen: I'm sorry I e-mailed you directly on this
subject--I meant to post my response for all list members--so I'll do a very
brief re-cap. While doing vepassana med. 7 years ago I had a dramatic k
release at brow chakra which was followed by a continual flow of energy at
brow as well as at all other areas for several months. Although I could no
longer meditate nearly as much as before I did find that as long as I used the
vipassana technique of just observing the energy my experience was quite safe
and relatively painless. It was after going to teachers who used techniques
designed to manipulate the energy that all my problems began, including:
chronic headache at brow and crown, severe stomach distress(including
inability to eat for 3 months), sacroiliac pain making it hard to sit down,
significant in sexual potency and at various times heart palpitations,
increased pulse and blood pressure. By far the most active area is the
brow chakra at which I have had a constant pulsation for 7 years. Teachers I
went to said I had too much energy concentrated at brow and either used
exercises or shaktipat to try to move it down to lower chakras. That is when
my debilitating problems in these other areas seemed to begin. A swami I later
talked to said they had been wrong--that in my situation my energy clearly
only wanted to go up, not down, and that these teachers had turned an
otherwise healthy process into a problematic one. Who knows? To
be honest, after 7 years of experiencing this and reading everything I could
find I'm still not sure what all I believe, except that it does seem that the
only safe practice I followed was that of simply observing the energy. Other
than that I feel that I got a little greedy at some point and got into
thinking of the energy as a vehicle to transcendent states, spiritual
phenomena, etc, rather than simply as a gift which I should accept on its own
terms for what it had to offer. Of course it's hard not to get greedy or to
want these things, but the last 7 years have taught me in the most painful way
that not only is this dangerous but also not necessarily what being truly
spiritual is really about in the ultimate sense. I hear opinions
frequently expressed about what a physical problem in a chakra means in an
individual---that it represents this or that. I'm much more cautious in
attempting a diagnosis, bearing in mind that many great saints of the past
were plagued with all kinds of physical problems and often died from them. Do
we know why Ramana died of stomach cancer or Ramakrishna died of throat
cancer? Thank you for your questions and I welcome any feedback-----Jerry
