Jan: To my knowledge, stories about hermaphrodites are allegories to convey
the impossible, the bliss of the mystical union (moksha, nirvana). Because
this union isn't attained in the proper sense (what is attained will be
lost), the stories tell of a blissful state that has existed but was lost.
Loosing because of one's incarnation and the conditioning that goes with it.
So one has to go the reverse way in order to "restore" this blissful state.
